About the Movie
Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2016 Venice Film Festival, Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz’s epic story of revenge deferred functions as a tale of urban theater and class warfare. After 30 years in prison, a woman discovers that her friend and fellow inmate committed the murder of which she was accused. This leads to her release and subsequent discovery of the man who framed her. Inspired by Tolstoy, The Woman Who Left is a sensitive expression of family and forgiveness.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The film makes uncompromising demands on your attention and your empathy. But it is also illuminating and, in its downbeat, deliberate way, exhilarating.
Fresh: The Woman Who Left may not be a movie for everyone, but if you allow yourself to settle into its leisurely tempo and marinate in its heroine's journey, it can be a richly rewarding experience.
Fresh: The latest supersized opus from Filipino maximalist Lav Diaz is a powerful and, by his standards, refreshingly contained moral study.
Rotten: The pace is an anti-ornamental affectation that artificially distends an hour's worth of action.
