About the Movie

In 1939 Poland, Antonina Zabinska (two-time Academy Award® nominee Jessica Chastain) and her husband successfully run the Warsaw Zoo and raise their family in an idyllic existence. Their world is overturned, however, when the country is invaded by the Nazis and they are forced to report to the Reich's newly appointed zoologist (Daniel Brühl). To fight back on their own terms, the Zabinskis risk everything by covertly working with the Resistance and using the zoo's hidden tunnels and cages to save families from Nazi brutality.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It doesn't burn through the conscience and haunt you forever like Schindler's List, but in spite of its laid-back reluctance to shock and horrify, it's never trivial or boring. – Rex Reed, New York Observer, Apr 5, 2017

Rotten: If it's remembered at all, it will be seen as a missed opportunity to tell a powerful story. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Mar 31, 2017

Fresh: Niki Caro breaks out of the genre and emerges with a truly moving and original film. She uses the familiar structure of survival and rescue, but her focus is on the mechanics of cruelty itself in an unlikely setting. – Jacob Soll, The New Republic, Apr 4, 2017

Fresh: It's held together by the fierce-as-always Jessica Chastain, who - burrowing deep into a slight Slavic acccent - brings Antontina to trembling, big-hearted life. – Stephen Whitty, Newark Star-Ledger, Mar 31, 2017

Animals Were Best Actors

I really wanted to like this movie. Chastain is one of my favorite actors. The first thirty minutes built suspense, but miscasting of the German zoologist and Chastain's husband made the characters uncompelling. Once the animals left the screen, the hiding of the Jews really never aroused suspense or compassion. I love WWII movies, but really wished I had watched this on Redbox for $1.50.

Netflix or Amazon Prime

My guess is september 2017. Sorry, but i could wait 3 months to watch this.
Miscasting some key characters. Fell asleep.

Great Movie!

This WWII movie is not as grotesquely violent as a lot of other ones although it is violent. I know it was a terrible war though and the jews were treated so bad. This was a story that I never knew even happened and worked out good for those people who were saved. It's definitely worth seeing.
