About the Movie
Somebody said get a life...so they did. In Ridley Scott's adventurous road picture, two friends --unhappy housewife Thelma (Geena Davis) and strong-willed waitress Louise (Susan Sarandon)-- leave responsibilities behind to take a weekend fishing trip in the mountains in their 1966 T-bird convertible. But...at a roadside honky-tonk, where they stop to 'blow off steam,' a man tries to rape Thelma. Louise reacts by shooting the creep with a .38, and this action turns them into dazed and confused fugitives. Now the subject of a nationwide hunt, they regain their determination and recklessness. The film concludes at the Grand Canyon with an indelible image of their final declaration of freedom.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Their adventures, while tinged with the fatalism that attends any crime spree, have the thrilling, life-affirming energy for which the best road movies are remembered.
Fresh: Right from its gratuitously gorgeous opening shot-a beckoning panorama of red-rock mesas Thelma & Louis lets you know that it's going to be well, bigger than just another road movie.
Fresh: This wincingly funny, pertinent and heartbreaking road movie means to get under your skin, and it does.
Rotten: If the only way a woman can light up the screen these days is with a .38-caliber pistol, isn't that just another form of subordination?
In a class of its own
Sarandon and Davis — Louise and Thelma — will stick in my mind for the rest of my life. I rented this twice in two days, is how much I enjoyed it. You could watch a movie every night for a year without coming across a character you believe in as much as you will these two women. The film isn't perfect — in places Ridley Scott seems to have had trouble deciding on what tone to keep, and supporting performances are uneven — but the two friends and their worsening predicament grip you hard enough to make all glitches irrelevant. The cinematography is outstanding, too. No other film I've seen comes close for shots of the American Southwest; sometimes you feel the buttes and mesas are pushing the women on toward their appointed end. If I could only pick five films to watch in the rest of my life, this would be one of them.
One of my all-times favorites
This film blew me away when it was released. 22 years later, it is still fresh, funny, moving and incredibly beautiful.
