About the Movie

When Akin arrives at the farm, he finds his job. This is what he expected to find. When Sarah opens her legs, she finds someone watching. This is what she expected to find. When Jeremiah opens his mouth, frightening things come out of it. This has come to be expected. But what happens by the creek next to the cow. This was not expected.Director Josephine Decker’s highly acclaimed second feature unfolds with the lyricism and inexorable sense of tragedy of an ancient Appa- lachian murder ballad. Indie icon Joe Swanberg (director of Happy Christmas and Drinking Buddies) delivers a beautifully understated performance as Akin, a soft-spoken farmworker who takes a summer job working for the belligerent, domineering Jeremiah (Robert Longstreet), who lives in incestuous isolation with his daughter. Sophie Traub’s performance as the daughter, Sarah, has the sun-dappled quality of one of Andrew Wyeth’s Helga paintings: hers is a completely innocent and destructive sexuality, overripe to the point of bursting.Thou Wast Mild and Lovely is a highly intimate and subtly erotic thriller inspired by John Steinbeck’s East of Eden and featuring love, death, guns, goats, a farmer, his grown daughter and the secrets they no longer succeed in keeping.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Ms. Decker especially likes to cut away from a shot just as or before it catches an actor's glance (or catches our eye). It's a device that risks growing mannered. – Nicolas Rapold, New York Times, Nov 13, 2014

Fresh: Our glimpses of what's already occurred and what will soon come are vivid and impressionistic, prophetic warnings about which everyone seems powerless to do anything other than silently observe. – Michael Nordine, Village Voice, Nov 11, 2014

Fresh: Like most classic stories, this one is simple, but its realization is so surprising in its details, so original in its visual invention, as to make most other movies seem (at least temporarily) shot by the numbers. – Richard Brody, New Yorker, Nov 4, 2014

Fresh: Traub's Sarah is fascinating, with an almost feral sexuality that makes her the most crucial component of the movie. – Jenni Miller, AV Club, Nov 13, 2014

Thou wast mild & lovely

This is the worst movie I have ever seen. I want my money back.

Dark Fun

Fresh and new. Fearless and fun. Looking forward to what’s next from Decker.

Thou Wast Mild & Lovely

Josephine Decker’s second feature length film is not for all tastes. Sensual, grotesque, beautiful, perverse, erotic, repugnant, neb-gothic, poetic, intense, horrifying, electrifying and ultimately captivating. There is a lot going on here and just as you expect the film to trip itself up, it only manages to take us deeper into the darkest corners of the damaged human psyche. More concerned with creating an unrelenting tone of tension which sneaks in under your skin. She is not playing by the rules. This is quite an achievement for an indie filmmaker challenged with such a low budget) than big budget movies. It is also essential to note that Decker’s cast is amazing. Joe Swanberg is at times deceptively benign but the threat of suppressed sexual rage is always looming. Robert Longstreet can always be counted on to deliver a memorable turn, but here the level menacing danger is unnerving. The real acting power here is Sophie Traub. She is given some more than challenging lines and situations — all of which she makes believable. I will never think of frogs in the same way. Despite the challenges of a severely limited budget, Josephine Decker has established a unique and potent cinematic voice. And, the comparisons I often read/hear to David Lynch are lazy comparisons. Decker is exploring aspects of human connection in a strange but strongly female perspective. Her interests are totally unique from David Lynch. A brilliant and unique film.
