About the Movie
Ever since Al Capone built Happyland Amusement Park in the 1930s, treasure hunters have believed Capone’s lost fortune awaits somewhere at the end of a hidden ride no one has ever found… until tonight. When Henry (Lucas Jade Zumann) finds a set of blueprints leading to the loot, he recruits his best friend and big sister on the quest. The kids quickly find themselves on an incredible adventure when they sneak into the abandoned park and witness it’s attractions magically come to life. To make it out alive, Henry and his pals must team up with a friendly sea witch (THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUN’s Kristen Johnston) to do battle against an evil mermaid, deadly pirates, a fire-breathing dragon and an armada of blood-thirsty monsters. And all on a school night!
Hits the Bullseye for its Target Audience
As an adult, I enjoyed this movie, probably in no small part due to the way it touches on beats from movies popular in my own tween & teen years of which I was quite fond. Plus, I found it to be a refreshing break from the cynically recycled junk churned out by the big studios. What this lacks in large-scale production value, it makes up for in sincerity -- and some surprising thrills.
My daughter was 11 when we saw this on the big screen and it truly impressed her. She loved the characters, found it genuinely exciting, and quickly moved it to the top of her favorite movies list. (Thus my five-star rating.)
I found it refreshingly light on the snark, almost devoid of the obligatory crassness so prevelant these days, and still both funny and exciting for this type of kid-friendly adventure.
