About the Movie

In this "absurdly entertaining" thriller (New York Times), Academy Award® Nominee John Hawkes "gives the performance of his career" (Ain't It Cool News) as Private Investigator Mel Sampson. When tasked with tracking down a woman from his own past, Sampson finds himself navigating the dark corners of Southern California and the menagerie of eccentric personalities and lost souls who inhabit it. Filmed in a series of stunning unbroken takes and featuring a gut-wrenching, tour-de-force by John Hawkes, TOO LATE tells the story of a missing woman, but paints the portrait of a lost man.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: While it can be frustrating to see some filmmakers dash off copies of other movies, it's deeply enjoyable to find one who so appreciates his inspirations. – Ken Jaworowski, New York Times, Mar 31, 2016

Rotten: A supremely self-conscious genre exercise in which character and emotional depth don't seem to be on the very meta menu. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, Mar 30, 2016

Fresh: A strangely involving, idiosyncratic masterwork that echoes the style of such filmmakers as Quentin Tarantino, Robert Altman and even Welcome to L.A.'s Alan Rudolph, while amusingly honoring classic detective movie tropes. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Mar 18, 2016

Fresh: Hauck's first feature can be suffocating. This narrative puzzle should be more fun than it is. – Sheri Linden, Hollywood Reporter, Mar 14, 2016
