About the Movie
Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett star in TRUTH, based on a riveting true story of one of network news’ biggest scandals. As a renowned producer and close associate of Dan Rather (Redford), Mary Mapes (Blanchett) believes she’s broken the biggest story of the 2004 election: revelations of a sitting U.S. President’s military service. But when allegations come pouring in, sources change their stories, document authenticity is questioned, and the casualties begin to mount. This dramatic thriller goes behind the scenes to expose the intricacies of journalistic integrity and what it takes to reveal the TRUTH.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The film feels dodgy, tentative and uncertain as to how to frame its own protagonist in a complicated story of journalistic compromise (and worse).
Fresh: Engrossing and occasionally moving ...
Fresh: Robert Redford plays Dan Rather. I know. Just reading that out loud seems odd -- but Redford does a terrific job of capturing Rather's on-air cadence and his larger-than-life off-air persona.
Fresh: Ultimately, some of the answers in "Truth" are unsatisfying, but it asks important questions, which is one of journalism's chief responsibilities.
Better than critics would have you believe
The movie isn’t named “Truth” because those involved believe they are presenting you The Truth. Their point is that truth often comes down to whatever you choose to believe, because no one can have all the facts all the time. On the whole, I think liberals approved of the movie because it “proved" the Bush cover-up; conservatives approved because it “proved” the lies about the “Bush cover-up”. In the end, whichever “truth” wins depends on who has the most muscle, like history being written by the winners, not the losers.
Put aside the whole Bush thing....
I get the feeling that a whole lot of Bush fans are weighing in on this movie and they are really missing the point. As the Mapes character said in the film, there was plenty of reason to believe Bush got into the Reserves to avoid Vietname and wasn't serious about his time in the Reserves but let's not get sidetracked by the provinance of one lousy document. It's as though the Bush fans are still arguing that WMD existed. It's time to move on and enjoy the movie for what it is: the tale of one woman who was knocked from the very top and ripped to shreds by corporate; sacrificed, discarded. I found it similar to Spotlight in many ways. Woman and children -- easy to use, easy to abuse, easy to push aside. I loved the interaction and trust between Mapes and Rather -- I wish there had been more of it. I think they overplayed the angle of her abusive father and how she hated bullies. But Cate the great was terrific, as was the entire cast. I'd probably give it 4 stars if I didn't feel that the "Bushies" are fighting an old, old war and weighing in.
I thought it was good. Acting was good. Story was entertaining. Now with the the politics of the story it really depends. We willl probibly never no the truth. But dont judge the movie if your politics get in the way. Movie was great
