About the Movie
From the company that brought you "Hoop Dreams," comes a documentary about a rural Midwestern print shop where international artists meet retired craftsmen, and together they navigate the convergence of modern design and traditional technique.
Excellent- another genius movie from Kartemquin. Rural America, graphic design, crumbling industrialism, nice old folks- what more do you want? Dope.
This is not hoop dreams, it is design dreams
This is a lovely look at an important part of the history of typography and its impact on the way we do design today. If you know nothing about design or typography it doesn't matter, the movie fills in some of this information. But, better than that are the scenes of rural America and the spirit of it. Two Rivers, Wisconsin is the town the movie was shot in, AND this is the same town that invented the ice cream sundae! Contrast that with some open-hearted, big city, hipster designers who have fallen in love with wooden type and gorgeous old machines and you have yourself a film. This movie also slows the world down so you can see the details, almost smell the ink and think about where we have arrived in our modern times. Its a really nice film.
