Plot Summary

Discover the true history of the era of pulp fiction and the golden age of science fiction, fantasy and adventure. Pulp fiction, named for the low-quality paper on which the stories were printed, blossomed in the early twentieth century. After WWI and the Great Depression, audiences sought tales with strong heroes, exciting adventures and alien encounters. This entertaining documentary traces the golden years of pulps, beginning in the 1920's, by highlighting numerous writers including Erle Stanley Gardner and Edgar Rice Burroughs. Popular and prolific authors Ray Bradbury and Frederik Pohl recall the days of nominal pay, short deadlines, and insatiable demand for copy. Special coverage is given to the original cover art that defined pulp, featuring beautiful women, space creatures and blazing weapons.

Why the obsession with L. Ron Hubbard?

The degree to which this documentary treats L. Ron Hubbard is far out of proportion to his importance as a writer, especially given that he is pretty extensively covered, whereas no other writer of the era is more than mentioned in passing.

That's not to say he isn't important, but it barely covers Robert E. Howard, Raymond Chandler, H.P. Lovecraft, and more or less everyone else, all of whom are, I'm sorry, still seriously read while Hubbard just plain isn't... he just sure isn't as important as this documentary makes him out to be. Also, Galaxy Press, pretty prominently featured, is simply not a prominent publisher.

In answer to the question posed in the title, this is an essentially an extensive commercial for Galaxy Press and L. Ron Hubbard. In between, there's some interesting information presented by some engaging experts (Otto Penzler and Time Powers are stand-outs).

I would definitely rent rather than buy.

Wheres the real pulp fiction?

Seriously, if apple thinks that this stupid video will make more money than the actual pulp fiction then there sadly mistaken. It racks my brain trying to figure out why they wont put that master piece on itunes.
