About the Movie

Academy Award® winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces this epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis "Louie" Zamperini (Jack O'Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived on a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII – only to be caught by the Japanese navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand's (Seabiscuit: An American Legend) enormously popular book, it’s the inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: "Unbroken" is a rousing old-fashioned yarn with numerous exciting set-pieces and an uncomplicated hero you root for all the way through. It's entertaining throughout and made with a high level of technical skill. – Andrew O'Hehir,, Jan 4, 2015

Fresh: "Unbroken" stirs a moviegoer by default; it's an astounding story of human endurance that has been brought a little too safely to the screen. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Dec 26, 2014

Rotten: A tale of endurance, "Unbroken" takes endurance to sit through. – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal, Dec 25, 2014

Rotten: Unbroken is a fitting title for this excruciating cinematic treatment of the flyboy's ordeal. It plays like an endless, unrelieved gauntlet of suffering, an onslaught untempered by grace or redemption. – David Hiltbrand, Philadelphia Inquirer, Dec 25, 2014

This inspirational story of the hero Louie Zamperini is by far the greatest movie I have ever watched. Angelina beautifully captures the essence of the human spirit and how courage and determination can take people to many places. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie, people of all ages needs to watch this.

One of the Finest Fils Ever Made

I've been waiting for about 15 years for someone to make the Lou Zamperini story. He died last June, and this is a fitting tribute to one of America's greatest citizens. I just saw the movie, and it does his story justice. There are a few minor points that are changed for the sake of storytelling, but nothing that changes the essence of the tale. For example, Lou and Pete actually washed ashore, but here they are picked up by a Japanese ship. Same idea, but this version plays better on film. The other minor details are insignificant. Just remember when you jump at the shark scene, the sharks had already left the area weeks before. But enough nitpicking, I absolutely loved the movie and it captured the spirit of the great Louie Zamperini perfectly!

This movie is perfect transcription of the book, a story of survival, redemption, an example of what world war 2 was like for POW's.
