Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: For all those out there who can't get enough of Prince, Under the Cherry Moon may be just the antidote.
Rotten: [A] faux-'30s goof about an impish gigolo who woos and abuses a rich debutante.
Rotten: As flat and uninteresting as a newsreel from the 1930s about vacationing in the south of France.
Rotten: [An] absurdly bad movie.
Has no color and none of the magic of Purple Rain. What was Prince thinking? Save your money, your gonna need it for gas anyways.
IM A FAN
yes, this movie is not in color but if thats a big deal this movie is not for u. as for me, i get it. i love this movie, its funny and interresting....and its no surprise that the sound track sweet! i love prince, and i think he just loves to show off who he is...Im not mad at u baby.
You really have look at this movie for the time that is was created. Its a simple movie for a simpler time. Prince made music that crossed all color and sex lines and created a sexual revolution along with Madonna. It wasn't a black movie or a main stream flick. It was not made with a big budget or have a large amount of violence, profanity or special effects. This movie mixed old power ideas with love (and scandal to make it interesting) to create a well enjoyable movie. The issue here is that it does not FIT in any category we have today: drama, comedy, romantic comedy, blah, blah, blah. It was a unique blend of his imagination just as his music. Is Prince the villain or the hero, does he get the girl or the shaft? Can he finally love or will he travel through women forever? Thats what it was about in my eyes. A classic for those who do enjoy a plot and character development of that time.
