Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: More aggressively violent and thankfully less mythology-driven than previous installments, Underworld: Awakening is strictly for the converted.
Rotten: The most generic entry of the bunch.
Rotten: [The] latest, dreadful entry in the vampires-battling-werewolves franchise.
Rotten: There's not much to this movie beyond a slick procession of dark, gleaming violence.
AN UNNECESSARY, YET ENTERTAINING SEQUEL!
The "Underworld" films have always been sort of a guilty pleasure of mine. Unlike most of the top critics on Rotten Tomatoes, I've never taken these movies seriously, and in a way, that's really what makes them fun to watch. As long as you're not overly critical about the significant lack of character development and storytelling, these flicks make for fun, hard-hitting sci-fi action-adventures. "Underworld Awakening", the fourth film in the lucrative franchise, is certainly no exception. Although it's probably the most inconsequential entry in the series, it still packs in more of the same mindless gory thrills and hyper-stylized visuals that we're already familiar with. Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two movies, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrior Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species. Meanwhile, in an almost completely unrelated subplot, Selene discovers she's the mother of a half-Vampire/half-Lycan daughter. Although the story is bland and forgettable, the characters are one-dimensional and the dialogue is unbelievably bad, just about everything else the flick has to offer makes up for those slightly distracting issues. The CGI effects are well-crafted, the score is surprisingly epic and the action scenes are unflinchingly extreme. All in all, if you've seen the first three films in the saga, you probably already know what to expect: mediocre acting, polished cinematography, poor writing and plenty of fun, mindless, R-rated bloodshed. Rapid in pace and competently directed, the movie throws boredom right out the door and replaces it with mile-a-minute excitement. If that's right up your alley for a sci-fi action flick, you won't be disappointed with "Underworld Awakening".
i stopped listening to critics a long time ago. as a fan of the series (not including rise of the lycans) U.A. was highly entertaining. can't wait to add it to my blu-ray collection. if you're a fan of the underworld franchise, you'll love it.
What More Could You Want?
This one could possibly be the best Underworld yet. There were really no slow moments; something was always happening. And it still gives the bloody violence as you're expecting, just like the other ones. My only complaint about this movie is that it seemed VERY short, like it didn't even seem like an hour. And I didn't even want it to be over! It's one of those movies where you get so into it, that you're upset when it ends. And the ending definitely means that there's another one coming!
