Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: If the movie is a bit of a mystery, so is Carruth. – Melissa Maerz, Entertainment Weekly, Dec 17, 2013

Fresh: Carruth's visual approach, saved from abstraction by his own rapid, forward-leaping editing, is extremely assured. Seimetz is a fine and expressively haunted actress. I look forward to the enigmas in Carruth's next picture. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Dec 17, 2013

Fresh: Should you see Upstream Color? A better question may be: How many times should you see it? – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Dec 17, 2013

Rotten: What the movie points to is worth following until you're left with an enormous map that you spend the rest of the drive trying to refold. – Wesley Morris, Grantland, Jan 3, 2014

Upstream Color

This was my favorite film of 2013. Stylistically is beautiful, repulsive and hypnotic. It is equally so when it comes to substance. But, this is a true cinematic puzzle of a movie if ever there was one. Multiple viewings will be required to fully understand the plot and the cinematic metaphor at work here. Amazing. And, Shane Carruth did it all. …and he did it on a shoestring budget. To me, this is a cinematic masterpiece.

This is not a movie that a film lover can afford to miss.

The word masterpiece is often overused but not by me and certainly not here. This is without a doubt the best film of 2013 and also one of the best films of this decade so far.
