Molly Gunn is the freewheeling daughter of a late rock legend, and the toast of the Manhattan social scene. But when her inheritance is stolen, Molly is forced to do something she's never done before - get a job. Molly becomes a nanny to precocious Ray Schleine, an "eight-year-old going on forty." Emotionally distant from her fast-paced A&R executive mother, Roma, Ray has grown up with a revolving door of nannies and little stability. Molly and Ray both feel painfully alone in the world, but as they try to make their new arrangement work, each discovers in the other a true friend.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: A modern fairytale that loads up big-time on the girly trappings but doesn't give you much in the way of plot or characters or even plain old sense.
Rotten: Locates Fanning's 'maturity' in a fear of germs that comes off as borderline psychotic, and Murphy's childlike free spirit in her apparent inability to avoid walking into walls.
Rotten: There's more than a hint of desperation to Murphy's characterization.
Rotten: Combine two mannered performances with a script intent on achieving maximum cuteness, and you've got one wince-inducing sugar rush.
A Great Movie!
What a wonderful movie! Molly (Brittany Murphy) is a young adult who is spiralling out of contol. She has blown through all of her inheritance, that her father left her upon his death, and she is being evicted from her lush apartment and forced to move in with friends. Another of her friends has gotten her a job babysitting an uptight, germ-a-phobe, 10 going on 30 little girl who's mother is too busy to spend time being involved in her life. I can actually watch this movie over and over again. The whole movie is very well done and is worth the watch!
Uptown Girls CAN be classified as a run-of-the-mill comedy these days, but there`s something very sweet about it. If you don`t laugh, you smile. I don`t really like the beginning, but I really love the middle through the end. Dakota Fanning was very good in this one! Don`t watch this movie expecting original comedic genius, though. Oh, and avoid the trailer at all costs. It really advertises a movie that isn`t really the Uptown Girls you see here. I do reccomend downloading it to your iPod, because it makes a very good airplane movie :)
