Plot Summary

For years, the fearsome figure known only as One Eye (Mads Mikkelsen - PUSHER, FLAME & CITRON, CASINO ROYALE) has defeated everyone he's encountered, but he's treated more like an animal than a warrior. The only person he has any relationship with is the young boy who brings him food and water daily. Constantly caged and shackled, One Eye has drawn the attention of a new force now sweeping the countryside and displacing the society's leaders: Christians.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Mr. Refn, who can pull off stylish brutality (in the Pusher films and Bronson), shows no knack for the kind of visionary, hallucinatory image making that would render Valhalla Rising memorable. – Mike Hale, New York Times, Jul 16, 2010

Fresh: When it comes to crazy, violent, semidelirious, testosterone-laden, proto-Viking tales about a mute visionary one-eyed warrior who breaks skulls, Valhalla Rising is pretty great. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 15, 2010

Fresh: You sometimes wish Refn's gift for Ridley Scott-level mayhem had won the battle over his much iffier Werner Herzog leanings. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Jul 23, 2010

Fresh: Lots of movies about the Middle Ages can do the mud and blood -- though we sure see a lot of both here -- but in this movie it's like Refn has ripped you out of time and dropped you there. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Jul 16, 2010

Excruciatingly fantastic

Definitely not a film for every one or easy to understand. With films like these, there is always an unbelievably deep plot that can only be understood to its full extent by having it explained by the writer. With that said, most viewers will only be able to guess as to what is going on, and more understanding (to the best extent that they can) will come after multiple viewings. Others will grow bored with it and hate it. The only way to enjoy this is to already have a taste for films like this. Set the story aside and you have some of the best acting,, scoring, filming, and dialog (despite how little there is) that I've ever seen.

Awful - Boring - Tedious

Beautiful photography does not make up for the lack of plot or the fact that nothing interesting happens. The end is more baffling than the beggining and the middle takes forever. I should not have to refer to the writer to understand what is going on; film is a communication medium, so let him communicate something that can be understood. Do not allow yourself to be persuaded by the bright reviews shown - this is not entertaining.

absolute boredom

This movie is a s boring as they come, you just keep waiting for something to happen, anything and what comes, nothing, very dull movie would not recommend.
