About the Movie
Even in war-torn Kashmir, beauty and hope remain. Gulzar is a sensitive and poetic soul, struggling to make ends meet with his tourist boat on breathtaking Dal Lake. Fed up with the violence surrounding him, he plans to run away with his street-smart best friend Afzal, but a military curfew forces them to delay their escape. Stranded, the two friends discover Asifa, a beautiful young scientist researching the lake. As Gulzar becomes Asifa’s lake guide, they form an unlikely bond. With the end of the curfew looming, and tensions with Afzal rising, Gulzar must decide whether to leave for a new life or stay with a new love.

Fresh: [A] low-key, beautifully photographed movie ...
Fresh: A likably low-key docudrama set in an attractive area of politically turbulent Kashmir.
Fresh: American filmmaker Musa Syeed directs a lyrical, tender film set on renowned Dal Lake in the disputed Indian state of Kashmir with this nimble debut feature.
Fresh: The calm surface of Dal Lake hides a multitude of sins in the exquisite Valley of Saints, and director Musa Syeed captures its tranquil beauty amid the chaos of Kashmir.
A very idyllic yet chaotic film
I am amazed at how Musa Syeed captured the tension and fluidity of Dal Lake and its residents, and exhibited their microcosmic representation of Kashmir as a whole. In both the characters and the setting, he shows how such beauty can flourish in the most stressful of states.
