About the Movie
In the mid-1990s, Dublin was nothing short of a war zone, with a few powerful drug lords battling for control. Their most fearsome opponent was not the police but the courageous journalist Veronica Guerin (Cate Blanchett), who covered the crime beat with unmatched intensity. As she investigated and exposed the "pushers," balancing her home and family against her responsibility to her readers and her country, she became a national folk heroine to the people of Ireland; each attempt on her life only galvanized her legend. Her brutal murder in 1996 forced a dramatic revision of Ireland's laws and led to the arrests of the nation's top criminals. Based on a true story, this powerful, emotional film from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of "Pearl Harbor" and "Black Hawk Down," and director Joel Schumacher ("Bad Company," "A Time to Kill," "Falling Down," "Tigerland"), gives unique insight into a fascinating and complex aspect of the Irish conflict and a poignant portrayal of a journalist who risked her life in search of the truth.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: You don't need subtlety for a movie like this -- which is fortunate considering that Schumacher is the director -- but you need a kind of craft that Schumacher doesn't possess.
Fresh: A smart, brisk thriller.
Rotten: An action flick passing as a eulogy.
Fresh: CateBlanchett has brought the ill-fated Veronica to vivid life.
This is a beautiful example of those people who are dedicated to their work because they know that now matter how difficult it is they can make a difference. Veronica Gueren is a honest and occasionly shocking piece, a must-see!
Okay but not worth buying and dowloading
Though a true story, it is unfortunately predictable and not nearly as intense as the story had the potential to be. It is just "okay" -- a movie in the "see and forget" catagory, not one I should have bought and wasted space (even though I have a great deal of it on my 80 gb ipod) on. There are definitely better true stories out there, and hopefully the itunes store will have a larger selection soon. The acting is great, the soundtrack is great, the movie is okay - but nothing "special". I am disappointed in the trust I had in so many who rated this movie so highly. There are much better films out there with similar true stories. This one would only be special if you are particularly interested in Irish law, Veronica Guerin was someone you were interested in prior to the movie, or you are a journalist perhaps it would be more interesting to you than anyone who does not qualify in any of those three catagories, as I did not. Three stars are probably even a bit generous, but the story is interesting enough to watch, just really not enough to own. Rent it before you buy it and download it is my advice. It might save you a few dollars, and a few gigs for something better whenever it HOPEFULLY comes along to the Itunes store.
Raw yet tender
A great balance of drama and suspense, the story is authentic and interesting the whole way through.
