About the Movie

Vessel is the real-life story of a young doctor, a boat, and an unlikely idea to help the world’s most vulnerable women. Horrified by anti-abortion laws around the world, Rebecca Gomperts devised an unconventional solution: providing safe abortions on a ship in international waters, thereby circumventing local laws. This thought-provoking documentary follows Gomperts’ creation of Women on Waves, the ensuing media and government frenzy, and its transformation from a wildly improbable plan into a global movement.

Customer Reviews

Amazing!

Brilliant and subversive, an inspiration to women everywhere!

by Nassim Assefi

A fascinating journey documenting one woman’s vision to make illegal abortion safer for all women worldwide. Dr. Rebecca Gomperts is a reproductive health angel and warrior—a doctor and artist, whip smart, funny, vulnerable, unrelenting, and creative in her drive to help women end their own unwanted pregnancies in countries that prohibit abortion. The documentary is supplemented with fabulous, educational animations, shows Dr. Gomperts' work over a decade, and also features her wonderful, global support staff. It is a rich and compelling portrait of guerrilla activism at its best.

Inspirational!

This film is not only about providing abortion services; it is about the ethical responsibility of healthcare professionals to strive to make safe, comprehensive services to all people regardless of where they live. It is a beautiful film, and an inspirational one, and a must-see for anyone who is passionate about public health and social justice.
