About the Movie

Los Aldeanos' hard-hitting lyrics resonate with the discontented Cuban population, but they get no airtime on the country's radio or television channels and their fans face abuse bordering on persecution by the police. "In every song they express our reality and our truth", says Adis Nidia Cruz. Her two sons were sitting on their porch one evening with friends, listening to Los Aldeanos, singing, dancing and waving a Cuban flag. At 11pm, five police cars showed up at the house, beat and arrested them. "Our music is direct and harsh, because that's our reality. And that's the government too: direct and harsh." Viva Cuba Libre offers a rare underground insight into the realities of daily life in modern Cuba.

Customer Reviews

Outstanding portrait of the real Cuba

If you want to know what is Cuba now and how the young generation think, perhaps you need to watch this independent film.

Super and inspiring

An intense look inside Cuba through the eyes of their hip hop heroes. Fascinating!

Intense and Entertaining

A powerful film about two of Cuba's most famous revolutionary musicians. Moving at a breakneck speed and integrating found footage, music videos, home movies, hidden cameras, and incredibly brave film crews, it reveals a brutal component of the Cuban experience rarely seen by international audiences. A bold and inspiring documentary.
