About the Movie

In the heart of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, United Nations soldiers guard a heavily fortified building known as the “special court.” Inside, Issa Sesay awaits his trial. Prosecutors say Sesay is a war criminal, guilty of heinous crimes against humanity. His defenders say he is a reluctant fighter who protected civilians and played a crucial role in bringing peace to Sierra Leone. With unprecedented access to prosecutors, defense attorneys, victims, and, from behind bars, Sesay himself, WAR DON DON puts international justice on trial for the world to see — finding that in some cases the past is not just painful, it is also opaque.

Loved it!!

I couldn't possibly give this film too many stars. For anybody interested in learning about civil war, genocide, and somehow finding justice for both the victims and perpetrators, War Don Don is a must see. Richman Cohen raises thoughtful and provocative questions throughout, without injecting too much of her own opinions. Beautifully done.

War Don Don

excellent. thought-provoking. should be seen and discussed in any forum designed to explore issues of genocide and justice.

War Don Don

This is a complex, nuanced film that raises important issues related to international criminal justice on a large scale and the very real lives on all sides that are impacted by a civil war. Are there mitigating factors that will promote healing and still allow for a just verdict? Although the outcome is known at the beginning, the film is still suspenseful and engaging on many levels.
