A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, "Watchmen" is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the Doomsday Clock--which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union--moves closer to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the outlawed but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion--a disbanded group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers--Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity...but who is watching the Watchmen?

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Zack Snyder's film version of Watchmen is a grim and grisly excursion into comic-book mythology.
Fresh: I think Snyder and his writers channel moments of the humanity and humor that's always present in Moore's work.
Fresh: Much more. Snyder and his writers have delivered a faithful translation, spinning the narrative out to 163 minutes -- which, I imagine, will please the novel's extremely vigilant fanbase.
Fresh: The film is a ballsy, brainy, and thoroughly bloody examination of human nature, pop culture and 'the good old days' that never were.

Best Superhero Movie Ever (yes, even better than The Dark Knight)
This movie is one of my favorites, if not my favorite, movie of all time. Everything about it was just so masterfully done and stayed so true to the source material (one of my favorite books of all time). I HIGHLY recommend getting this movie. I know I will
My Faith in Everything Remains Intact!
Watchmen is a graphic novel that shall forever remain in my heart. It has a brilliant, original story, complex characters, and an ending that will force all readers to forever question both the differences and respective definitions of good and evil. So naturally I was excited about Watchmen receiving some much deserved publicity, yet scared that should the movie be unsuccessful, people would remember the movie rather than the graphic novel. However, upon seeing the film, I was astounded by how heavily it relied on the source material's story and by each actor's brilliant and accurate performances as their respective characters. This is saying a lot since Watchmen does have a relatively obscure cast. Though with all movies based on another source, Watchmen does differ from its graphic novel counterpart. Some character roles are downplayed, some small facts are either ignored or changed, some scenes are added or removed, and while the violence fits with the overall theme of the story, much of it seems unnecessary after watching for an hour. Before seeing this movie, I heard a rumor that the ending would be changed in some minor way. Hearing this rumor I panicked. I thought what any fan wouldn've thought: "If you have to change this story in any way why are you making a movie about it". I was relieved however that while this rumor proved to be true, the outcome remains the same but the cause was simply altered. I shouldn't say more than that. Bottom line, while this movie should please fans of the graphic novel, I should note that it doesn't aply to all tastes for reasons that are controversial in nature. To make my previous statement less vague, I mean that everything one could possibly find inappropriate is present in this movie. To those who judge this movie harshly for these reasons, I don't judge you, I just acknowledge that our opinions will forever conflict on this matter. To fans of the graphic novel and of cinema in general, I recommend this movie wholeheartedly.
