Two gangs from opposite sides of the street. One romance that dared to cross the line. In 1961, this movie adaptation of the Broadway smash-hit musical West Side Story broke box office records and won an incredible 10 Academy Awards, more than any other musical before or since. On the streets of New York City, two gangs (the Sharks and the Jets) battle for territory and respect. But when Tony, the leader of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo, a chain of events is set in motion that will tear their worlds apart forever. Featuring music from Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, and songs like “America,” “Somewhere,” and “Tonight,” this timeless story of star crossed lovers and rival gangs races to a shattering climax you will never forget.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: What they have done with West Side Story in knocking it down and moving it from stage to screen is to reconstruct its fine material into nothing short of a cinema masterpiece.
Fresh: West Side Story is a beautifully-mounted, impressive, emotion-ridden and violent musical which, in its stark approach to a raging social problem and realism of unfoldment, may set a pattern for future musical presentations.
Fresh: The marvel is that the film still works so well.
Fresh: Natalie Wood, who was made a hit in the Kazan-Inge production of Splendor In the Grass and is the most promising young star of today, gives a fine dramatic performance.
"An American tragedy"... I think not.
Unlike what Jet leader Riff's girlfriend says, I believe that West Side Story is an amazing representation of prejudice in "modern" America. Not only is it a story about romance and coming to terms with the real world, it is a picture of what a truly great musical should contain. It has amazing songs, dancing, and actors. No wonder it received so many awards! This movie is also a great reference for those who are going to put on the musical, except for Maria’s (Natalie Wood) accent. It is TERRIBLE. Listen to Anita's (Rita Moreno) accent, because it is truly authentic.
