About the Movie
Two gangs from opposite sides of the street. One romance that dared to cross the line. In 1961, this movie adaptation of the Broadway smash-hit musical West Side Story broke box office records and won an incredible 10 Academy Awards, more than any other musical before or since. On the streets of New York City, two gangs (the Sharks and the Jets) battle for territory and respect. But when Tony, the leader of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo, a chain of events is set in motion that will tear their worlds apart forever. Featuring music from Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, and songs like “America,” “Somewhere,” and “Tonight,” this timeless story of star crossed lovers and rival gangs races to a shattering climax you will never forget.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: What they have done with West Side Story in knocking it down and moving it from stage to screen is to reconstruct its fine material into nothing short of a cinema masterpiece.
Fresh: West Side Story is a beautifully-mounted, impressive, emotion-ridden and violent musical which, in its stark approach to a raging social problem and realism of unfoldment, may set a pattern for future musical presentations.
Fresh: The marvel is that the film still works so well.
Fresh: Natalie Wood, who was made a hit in the Kazan-Inge production of Splendor In the Grass and is the most promising young star of today, gives a fine dramatic performance.
I love this movie! I haven't seen it in such a long time. I would definitely recommend this movie. For people who have never seen it, it is like Romeo and Juliet where two families do not want their children to be together. If I had a video iPod I would definitely buy this!
Hooray, first review!
West Side Story is a great adaptation of Romeo and Juliet which takes place in New York City. One of my personal favorites. Even though I would (repeat: WOULD) buy this, I could watch it any time its on Turner Classic Movies. In the long run: If you can never see this movie appear in your area or are looking for a good musical, then this would be for you. Otherwise, stick to watching this on TV and don't waste your money.
I saw the play and it was amazing! I've never seen the movie but, i'm sure it's just as good as the play!
