Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Mr. Coogan doesn't seem altogether comfortable with his part, which, like the story, undergoes a number of unconvincing changes. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Given its title and direct linkage to the 1986 Challenger shuttle disaster -- nearly adds tasteless to its unflattering hat trick. – Brian Lowry, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: [Director] Glatzer aims to wring laughter out of this desperation but succeeds only in producing a series of contrived characters and situations that make The Breakfast Club look like an unfiltered documentary. – Glenn Whipp, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: I've seen a lot of terrible movies in the line of duty, but What Goes Up might be the only genuinely unreleasable one. – Vadim Rizov, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Completely caught me a GOOD way.

I have to admit, I wasn't expecting much, and kind of watched this on a whim. I was expecting some kind of generic movie, and wasn't sure what I thought of hearing Hilary Duff's character described in reviews as a "sexy/flirtatious" teenager? Actually, Duff's character is more layered than that, and this movie has less in common with the American teen comedy/indie, and more in common with a cerebreal French or Kieslowski film. It's very simplistiic, yet it manages to be utterly thought-provoking.

I wasn't completely ready for this movie, and all that it entailed. It was strange and almost had no plot line...almost. I was surprised to hear some of the stuff coming out of Hillary Duff's mouth as well as Josh Peck. Overall it's a good movie and i would watch it again...
