About the Movie

What If is the story of medical school dropout Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe), who's been repeatedly burned by bad relationships. So while everyone around him, including his roommate Allan (Adam Driver) seems to be finding the perfect partner (Mackenzie Davis), Wallace decides to put his love life on hold. It is then that he meets Chantry (Zoe Kazan) an animator who lives with her longtime boyfriend Ben (Rafe Spall). Wallace and Chantry form an instant connection, striking up a close friendship. Still, there is no denying the chemistry between them, leading the pair to wonder, what if the love of your life is actually your best friend? The ensemble romantic comedy costars Megan Park and Oona Chaplin.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: What If doesn't break new ground. But it has charm to spare, and Radcliffe and Kazan are irresistible. No ifs about it. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Aug 8, 2014

Fresh: While What If does have its blemishes -- there are times when it's just too cute for its own good -- it's so enjoyable from moment to moment that it's easy to forgive. – Stephanie Zacharek, Village Voice, Aug 8, 2014

Rotten: Director Michael Dowse ("Take Me Home Tonight") can't quite decide on a tone -- sly, whimsical or wacky? -- but the problem is the material. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Aug 15, 2014

Fresh: In many ways, What If takes us down a road that When Harry Met Sally first traveled a quarter-century ago. Yet I didn't really mind revisiting the old friend vs. lover discussion, especially one with a contemporary slant and solid dialogue. – Bill Zwecker, Chicago Sun-Times, Aug 8, 2014

It was all Worth this one line:

"It is easy to become cynical about love. If you are lucky, it happens to you once in a lifetime” This is so true. In a generation where children are growing up with parents, that feel making money is more important than spending time with their kids. Those kids don’t know love, or when they grow up, how to recognize it. When they truly feel it, all they know is that they were just by a flood of emotion, and it filled a well that they had been unaware of until that moment. “If you are lucky, it will happen to you once in a lifetime” is true. I did not truly experience real love until I was married, and in my 30’s. I hope this generation that is following mine will know love, and understand it, much earlier than I. Imagine what that force, that power that is so much higher than anything we ourselves can comprehend, can overcome, and achieve. Here is a toast to the generation to come, and that which will follow. Chase your dreams, yours dreams, no matter what they are, and make them into a reality. In so doing, you will have left your fingerprint on this world, and all mankind. -Thomas

This is not the average flick. This movie is a roller-coaster of emotions and feels so real! This also brings up a great question. Can guys be friends with girls without sex getting in the way? This movie answers!

A “Dick Flick” Masquerading as a “Chick Flick” !

What If… The Actors Pawned Themselves Profusely ? ! And What If… only a small percentage of people understand Hollywood's agenda to desensitize the public for reasons that are highly questionable ? They just love to make twisted, sick, subject matter seem cool, hip and funny, when clearly it is vile and quite unappetizing. The only redeeming aspect of the movie… is the charisma of the actors. I found the storyline to be a very odd mixture of both good and bad. The relationships between the main characters are believable enough... and heart felt. However, on the down side… the actors were required to recite many crass and morbid lines. In fact, this movie is so infested with comments that pertain to sex, gore, violence and death… the ‘shock effect’ loses impact after you’ve heard it 50 + times. It is neither humorous nor interesting. And while the repetition of this particular aspect of the film may be appealing to the darker occult crowd in Hollywood… the crass comments were at best, dark and dull. A true sense of humor is one that embraces and cleverly illuminates LOVE of LIFE and all that nourishes and sustains it. Violence, gore and death are so OLD. So tired of it… The Elite Hollywood Ho-Hum Crowd. Death is for dullards and those who are spiritually and emotionally immature. Life and Life Abundantly (for all people)… is so much more exciting and interesting !
