Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The film is dully shot and so predictably plotted, you could tick off the items like you're packing a bag for the delivery room. – Farran Smith Nehme, New York Post, May 18, 2012

Rotten: Technically the genre isn't beneath contempt. But this movie is. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, May 24, 2012

Rotten: "What to Expect" rolls out this shocking revelation: Having kids is a messy and complicated process. – Tom Long, Detroit News, May 18, 2012

Rotten: Director Kirk Jones and screenwriters Shauna Cross and Heather Hach consistently fall back on corny music and slow-motion to try to get laughs. Very little of this movie feels risky, or even frisky. – Stephen Whitty, Newark Star-Ledger, May 18, 2012

DON'T EXPECT MUCH FROM THIS FILM...

I only saw "What to Expect When You're Expecting" because I was stuck on a four-hour long flight and this happened to be the only movie that was playing for free. And yes, like most of the critics have already been "gracious" enough to point out, it is pretty bland and forgettable. But that doesn't mean it's downright awful. Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, and Elizabeth Banks do the best with the material they're given, and their characters are pretty relatable for the most part. Plus, some of the pregnancy-themed humor can be surprisingly witty at times. But even with all its charms, the film still suffers under the weight of its disjointed narrative setup and derivative rom-com clichés. The director treats the whole production like a cheaply made sitcom, never bothering to expand any of the characters beyond mere representative stereotypes. It doesn't help that the comedy and drama end up clashing together in an awkward and unpleasant way. Then again, maybe I really shouldn't be over-analyzing a movie based on a popular guide book for expectant mothers. To turn something like that into an epic cinematic masterpiece would be like having to turn a work of Edgar Allen Poe into a kid-friendly comedy. Basically what I'm saying is that it is what it is. "What to Expect When You're Expecting" is far from memorable, but if you're looking for some lighthearted, albeit predictable entertainment with a charming ensemble cast, it's a decent pick overall.

4 Star Comedy

The movie is very funny… Elizabeth Banks and Jennifer Lopez are the best in this movie. Even though J.LO plays a very dramatic part on this movie she did a very good job. Cameron Diaz not so good… but the movie is very fun to watch and you will laugh.

Perfect.

I loved this movie. You don't realize how much of it is true until you have kids of your own. I would go to guess most of the poor reviews of this movie are by people with no children. I thought it was hilarious, I cried at parts, and I said "ohhh yeah, I know that feeling" to most of the movie. It's a great one for parents!
