Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Mr. Arnby knows all the genre codes, and how to subvert them when necessary.
Fresh: This polished Danish thriller about a sensitive female werewolf is full of restrained horror and tastefully Scandinavian carnage.
Rotten: Lycanthropy has rarely been more lethargic than in When Animals Dream, a dreamy Danish import about a young girl who responds to the discovery that she's a werewolf by pouting and brooding a lot.
Fresh: Joining the indie monster-girl genre alongside "Ginger Snaps," "Teeth" and "Let the Right One In" is this melancholy Danish werewolf tale from debut director Jonas Alexander Arnby.
The film has excellent production values and strong performances, but it never really goes anywhere with the sexuality metaphor. It fails to be interesting or scary.
Good European-paced horror
If you liked Let The Right One In, it’s in that zone.
Could one of the characters please tell me what is going on?
This movie tries to be Let the Right One In, but is not as clever for that. Either the screen play leaves a lot of detail out, or the editor cuts out parts of the story. A film that leaves a few questions unanswered is preferable, but WAD lets far too many question go unanswered for the structure and plot to make much sense. The acting is very good and the setting is stark and isolated enough to be real frightening. WAD reaches for Nordic Noir status, but it is a film that waits too long to reveal too little.
