About the Movie

Oscar-winners Clint Eastwood ("Million Dollar Baby," "Mystic River") and Richard Burton ("The Spy Who Came in from the Cold," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?") lead a small group of Allied paratroopers deep into enemy territory to rescue an American general held captive by the Nazis in a castle in the Bavarian Alps. With Oscar-nominee Mary Ure ("Sons and Lovers"). An action-packed thrill ride written by best-selling author Allistair MacLean.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It is so long (almost three hours) that it may finally bore the very action trade for which it was intended; yet it's just at that point of surface boredom that the movie aficionado will probably become entranced. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Alistair MacLean wrote an original screenplay that was treated with respect for the writer's unusual abilities as a master of actionful suspense. The resulting film is highly entertaining, thrilling and rarely lets down for a moment. – Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: It gets better, yields deeper layers of meaning, every time I see it. – Guardian, Jul 7, 2017

Fresh: It may be devoid of significance of any sort, but it is nevertheless passably entertaining, and certainly better viewing than most MacLean adaptations. – Time Out, Dec 26, 2007

Where Eagles Dare

When I was 10 years old,in 1969, I lived in Ghana,W.Africa.We had no television so our entertainment was my dad picking up movies at the Canadian Embassy. What ever movies were in the theaters back home in Canada and the US,we could get in our house, with the huge movie reels, projector and screen set-up.When I first saw the beauty of the German winter countryside and the gloriousness of the German castle along with the storyline and the star power of Richard Burton,"Where Eagles Dare" suddenly became, and has remained, one of my all time favorites.
