About the Movie
Tina Fey stars in this wickedly entertaining comedy about finding yourself in the most unlikely of places. Stuck in a rut, reporter Kim Baker (Fey) decides to shake things up by leaving her desk job in New York and taking a dangerous assignment in Afghanistan. Far from home and completely out of her comfort zone, a culture-shocked Kim befriends an adventurous reporter Tanya Vanderpoel (Margot Robbie), a stern Colonel (Billy Bob Thornton), and a charming photojournalist (Martin Freeman) to help her navigate this crazy new world. Amidst the chaos, Kim discovers her true strength as she risks it all to find the next big story.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The laughs are scattered, the emotions are muted, and the politics are largely toothless. Yet it still doesn't take much squinting to see the M*A*S*H that might have been.
Fresh: The film offers a fresh look at the adrenaline-laced lifestyle of war correspondents and a timely criticism of TV news. And it delivers some laughs, too.
Fresh: Writer and actress tilt between insecurity and bravado, employing dry, observational humour tinged with occasional sentimental flashes only outwardly out of character.
Fresh: ...enjoyable but slightly underwhelming...

Why was this marketed as a comedy? It has so much depth to it. A beautiful movie about friendship and what’s really important in life. Bravo Tina Fey.
Intriguing, sometimes funny, sometimes dark film
I think Rotten Tomatoes reviews suffer from having expected this movie to somehow be another 30 Rock or Baby Mama. While this story has a lot of funny moments, it's not the same sort of humor as Fey's usual fare; and it's more of a drama than a comedy.
The story follows an enterprising reporter who realizes she hasn't accomplished much in her life up until the start of the narrative, where she decides to become a war reporter. We watch her be swallowed whole by the culture of wartime, while somehow still standing outside the real fray. It's the type of movie where you're going to be thinking about the character and her reaction to her environment a long time after the movie is over, and wondering if you would've had her bravery.
That said, the main character has plenty of flaws, and her devotion to getting the news is practically a sickness by the end of the story.
This movie is hard to categorize, and people may have felt it tried too hard in too many different directions, or that all movies about war should try harder to get into the minds of both sides and say something profound about human conflict. This movie is about one woman's journey, however, and war is the backdrop for her self-discovery. In some ways it's a selfish story, but an intriguing one.
Definitely see it without expectations and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Tina's worst ever. Horrible script. Do we really need men screwing donkeys for a laugh? Pure cinamatic diarrhea!
