About the Movie

Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman writes, produces and makes his directorial debut with this timeless supernatural fantasy based on Mark Helprin's best-selling novel. Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, it is a story of miracles, crossed destinies and the age-old battle between good and evil. Colin Farrell plays a turn-of-the-century Irish thief who encounters a terminally ill heiress while robbing her house. Falling irrevocably in love with her, his only option is to discover a way to stop time and bring her back from death. In addition to the sweeping, romantic story, Akiva Goldsman's passion project features a remarkable roster of acting talent including Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown Findlay and Oscar® winners Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint and Russell Crowe.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Winter's Tale is preposterous twaddle. Use it as a date movie only if you don't love the one you're with. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Feb 14, 2014

Rotten: Not only is the story of magic, angels, demons and predetermined destiny preposterous, but the characters are also unconvincing and the dialogue sanctimonious. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Feb 13, 2014

Rotten: It might all make more sense to fans of the book. But you shouldn't have to have read the book to be able to see and enjoy the movie. – Jocelyn Noveck, Associated Press, Feb 14, 2014

Rotten: On a purely narrative level, Winter's Tale missteps early and often. Its earnestness is its downfall, resulting in opportunities for unintentional humor. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Feb 14, 2014

Great movie

I really enjoyed this movie ,I had to watch it twice .

Really Wanted to Love This But...

I felt as if each scene were a clue to another, far more interesting story that never gets fully realized. Very frustrating. I understand the "grander" idea behind the story, but felt its execution lacking, and its final burden of proof too disconnected from the first 3/4 of the film, as well as too vague to be satisfying, ha.

There's a clunky script and less-than-epic love-story involved (which--love stories don't have to be epic, but this one is meant to carry the heart of the film and simply doesn't), which do nothing to aid in the random but very important transition for our main character later in the story--and are tools that COULD have made this movie much more memorable.

I feel as though I were plunked into the middle of something, and there's just not enough information all around to really invest any heartstrings. Perhaps if it were a mini-series or trilogy, it could have been a lot...more.

That said, there's a charm and beauty to the film that gives it a magical feel (which is what I was initially drawn to from the trailers) and an edge of danger--both physical and otherworldly--that gives it enough suspense to see it through to the end. I'd advise at least a one-time watch. I might watch it again myself another time to see if I can enjoy it for what it is, now that I know not to expect more.

Plain WOW!

Breathtaking! Absolutely loved it!
