About the Movie

In the near future, "mutants" are the next link in the chain of evolution. Each are born with a genetic mutation that manifests into extraordinary powers. Under the tutelage of Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), the world's most powerful telepath, these "gifted" students have learned to control and direct their respective powers for the greater good of mankind. But when the Professor's former colleague and friend, Erik Lehnsherr a.k.a. Magneto (Ian McKellen) wages war against them and society, Xavier brings together a special group of mutants called "X-Men" to protect the world that fears them.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: It sucks that this choppily edited film appears rushed and incoherent in ways that cheat the story of its human resonance and the stunts of their anticipated pow. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Jul 15, 2015

Fresh: A distinctively absorbing entertainment, offering just enough popcorn thrills for mass audiences and just enough chewiness for hardcore sci-fi fans. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Jul 15, 2015

Fresh: X-Men, it must be said, has only a few truly thrilling moments. This is not a picture that tries to blow you out of your seat. But more than any other big movie this summer, it has a consistently inventive vision. – Jeff Giles, Newsweek, Jul 15, 2015

Fresh: The most beautiful, strange, and exciting comic-book movie since the original Batman. – David Denby, New Yorker, Apr 15, 2013

A Mildly Good Superhero Film...

Now, I'm a big Spider-Man and Batman fan, and when it comes to X-Men, I'd rather pass. The acting is all good. The directing and writing are what really hurt this film -- and the franchise as a whole. It steps away from the X-Men cartoons I grew up watching, with Wolverine's iconic blue and yellow suit, or the other individual mutants. The special-effects seem moderately cheap considering the film we are watching. Hardly any CGI is used, and when it is, we get very unrealistic imagery. The story is also un-superhero like, and while I do like the whole backstory of Xavier and Magneto, the other stories are just dull and I don't care what their powers are, or who they don't get along with. This is a very uninspiring superhero film. Yes, it's better than Ghost Rider and Fantastic Four, but when compared to other films of this genre (i.e. Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, and The Phantom -- just kidding about the last one) it just doesn't match up in overall quality. So, while I may not be an X-Men fan, I do like the franchise, just not the films. It's a mild reccomendation, and if I had to give my all out honest opinion about whether to rent or buy this, it'd have to be... Worth a rent/not a buy.
