Rotten: Year One is nowhere near as funny as the ancient-civilization movies I saw in high school: Life of Brian, History of the World Part I, Caligula. Its script isn't worth the papyrus it's inscribed on.
Rotten: Creatively it's a giant step backwards, with Jack Black and Michael Cera playing to the kids as inept hunter-gatherers who stumble across various Old Testament characters.
Rotten: Has neither wit nor wisdom nor charm nor beauty.
Rotten: [Year One has] some very funny moments but not enough of them.
Worst Film of '09
I saw this with my former girlfriend the day it came out. The premise seemed interesting...Michael Cera and Jack Black running around dressed like natives while crazy situations occur. It looked funny, so I thought I'd check it out. After it ended, I was massively disappointed. Year One is not a funny movie. It just plain insults your intelligence, with it's crass sexual humor and really dated story. Where the film goes wrong is when it tries to combine Monty Python situations with Apatow style dialogue, which sounds like a good idea, but frankly, the two styles don't really work together. Also, Jack Black and Michael Cera don't really blend together well. Jack Black just pretty much screams all his lines in the same manic tone he uses for all his films, and Michael Cera plays the same awkward guy you met on Arrested Development, Superbad, and Juno. Altogether, this is just a giant, lousy, incoherent mess of a film. Don't bother wasting your time on this garbage. For $14.99, you could buy a really good movie, like Adventureland or Slumdog Millionaire.
An unexpected mess.....
I looked forward to this movie for a while, seeing as how the two main characters seem to be a near perfect comedic duo...but this movie is nothing more than an hour long comedy sketch in which someone had a bunch of jokes they wanted to make public about every early time period, so they used this movie to tell every joke. They go through the roman times and the time of cain and abel and caveman times. strange... The jokes are spread out, but it you'll need to step a little further back in the timeline to get any laugh at all from this one. Some parts were very funny, but most were not funny at all. I know that if you haven't seen it then you're wondering how in the world is it possible that this movie isn't funny....but i wondered the same thing until i watched it. i wanted to laugh, but it just was a lousy movie. And, parents, if you're thinking that this is a kid-friendly movie then know that it isn't. A lot of innuendos and sexual references as well as bad language in every scene. I'm sure this unrated version will be more explicit than the already-heavily-innappropriate-theatrical-version. All-in-all I wouldn't watch this movie again, it was just disappointing for two such funny people.
This movie is better than the hangover. Just watch it.. if you have a sense of humor you will LOVE IT.
