Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The setting is futuristic, but the themes are ancient in "Young Ones," Jake Paltrow's eccentric merger of frontier western and science-fiction gadgetry. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Oct 16, 2014

Rotten: Gets so bogged down in its primal tale of murder and revenge that the most intriguing elements become little more than futuristic window dressing. – Geoff Berkshire, Variety, Jan 20, 2014

Fresh: Even grading on a curve for originality, "Young Ones" only halfway works. But it's a genuinely idiosyncratic vision of near-future doom that's never boring, with characters and images that will stick in my mind longer than many better, soberer films. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Jan 26, 2014

Rotten: "Young Ones" is a futuristic look at a world with little water, but the most barren thing in this Western-sci-fi flick is the character development. – David Lewis, San Francisco Chronicle, Oct 30, 2014

Embarrassing

This movie was embarrassing to watch. The special effects were impressive assuming a small budget. Otherwise, the dialogue is ridiculous and the story disjointed. The screenplay is a complete failure, how it ever got made and was actually released to the public is beyond any sense. The worst part is you can tell it was intended to be some kind of award winning masterpiece and somehow no one warned the writer/director how poor it was. As the movie went on I felt more and more embarrassed for the actors. You can see it in their faces during the "curtain call" at the end of the movie.

I enjoyed it

I thought this movie was good.

Oddly Worth Seeing

This is a film that will be greatly appreciated by a small audience. Patience is required to follow a slow-moving plot that ambles forward like its mechanical protagonist. Those who keep going will ultimately be glad that they did. Pray for rain.
