Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's thoroughly charming and gently comic and, if Mr. Shinkai finally plays it safe about what it means for an adolescent boy and girl to trade bodies and lightly toy with gender, he complicates the story in other ways. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Apr 6, 2017

Fresh: The movie's spirit is by turns energetic and serene, impetuous and wise, its wild shifts from comedy to tragedy to romance revealing themselves not as tonal swings so much as variations in a larger cosmic pattern. – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times, Apr 6, 2017

Fresh: Your Name is the most beautiful anime since Patema Inverted, with which it shares themes about the difficulties of personal connections as represented by inexplicable cosmic phenomena. – Sherilyn Connelly, Village Voice, Apr 4, 2017

Fresh: It's both gorgeous enough and emotionally engaging enough to be worth seeking out. – Bob Mondello, NPR, Apr 7, 2017

A Really Really Great Movie

First off, if you think anime is weird or cartoons for kids, please look past your assumptions and give this movie a chance. It is incredibly engaging and complex and keeps you on the edge of your seat quite literally until the last second. The artwork is beautiful, the humor genuine, the music shiver inducing. Without spoiling anything I can say that the movie description only scratches the surface of the story. All kinds of emotions play out here and even watching the movie more than once gives you a chance to pick up on things and make connections. I could go on, but all that I would really be saying with all those words is, definitely give it a go. Both the English and Japanese voice acting is great so you can't go wrong with either.

Pleased that I can purchase the subtitled version... better a week late than never. :)

Thank you!
