Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: What's striking is the absence of triumphalism -- Bigelow doesn't shy away from showing the victims shot down in cold blood in the compound -- and we come away with the overwhelming sense that this has been a grim, dark episode in our history. – Tom Charity,, Feb 5, 2013

Fresh: If you like World War II films, you'll enjoy this. – David Thomson, The New Republic, Jun 13, 2013

Fresh: Chastain makes Maya as vivid as a bloodshot eye. Her porcelain skin, delicate features and feminine attire belie the steel within. – Peter Howell, Toronto Star, Jan 11, 2013

Fresh: No doubt Zero Dark Thirty serves a function by airing America's dirty laundry about detainee and torture programs, but in its wake, there's a crying need for a compassionate Coming Home to counter its brutal Deer Hunter. – Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail, Jan 11, 2013

First Reviewer!!! Great Movie

Great film making

I believe that Bigelow and Boal underestimated the controversy that would be sparked by the film. While they argue the move is not a documentary and doesn't explicitly endorse torture, they should have anticipated how audiences could view it as such. That being said, you can't deny that this is a terrific piece of filmmaking - an excellent piece of craftsmanship. You can however, debate the politics. And isn't the purpose of great art to trigger reflection and start conversations about important topics?

CG review

This is the best drama I've seen all year. It has suspenseful, dramatic, and sometimes comical scenes. Jessica Chastain has come out of no where with this performance. She needs to prepare for a speech, because she has a great chance for an Oscar. Usually these typical war movies don't get awards or become big. Zero Dark Thirty has changed the idea of a war movie into a person involved in the war scenery with dialect. Which most war movies fail to bring.

This film takes place after the horrible event of Nine-Eleven where a woman just starts getting to know the busyness she is partaking in. She learns the ropes of intimidating a terrorist and learns how to find things. It takes the death of a friend to make her soul desire Osama Bin Laden. She spends about a decade of her life trying to find this man and have him killed.

A film like this is mostly about dialog and meaning. When it comes down to the big climax the director makes it realistic. The ending that everyone expected is not at all what the ending is. This captivating movie is at the top of the list when it comes to acting performances.
