The RAIDERS

Paul Revere and the Raiders are one of the most underrated Bands of all time. These guys were totally original and their albums, especially the early ones, can be played through without skipping to different songs because every tune is filled with their singular but perfectly simplistic formula - - Great Guitar, Bass Piano/Organ Drums AND Vocals! Get one of their early albums and listen to it all the way through a couple of times, you'll be a fan real fast.

What a Rotten Shame

This performance is from May 1967, not 1970 like is advertised. The fact that iTunes can't even get the decade right reveals how disrespected this band is. It's partly their own fault though. The Raiders only fully live TV performance occurred on the Tonight Show in 65 but was lost when many of Carson's mid-60s shows were mistakenly destroyed. Music history lost something when the Raiders always chose live vocals layered over canned instrumental tracks for TV performances. Over 600 TV appearances in the 60s and not one fully live recorded performance leaves the appearance they were a faux group like The Monkees. But they were a hard-rockin live band with not enough insight to stay true to their roots and show what they could really do...... Play LIVE hard-rockin' music. Instead, too much show biz. Bands many times reach pivotal crossroads during their careers and The Raiders, while still successful, unfortunately took the wrong fork in the road during 67 IMO. Sullivan Show would have been perfect venue. What a shame. An awesome band that deserves better.

Where's the rest of the song?

OK, it brought back memories to see these guys in their corny stage costumes, but this video could have been better. I don't remember bands lip-syncing on the Ed Sullivan show, but they're just mugging for the camera here. And they shortened the song, too. (I'd be very interested in seeing videos of these guys from the "Where The Action Is" program. I wonder how that would hold up today...)
