Amen Dunes Essentials

Songwriter Damon McMahon got his start wringing maximum atmosphere from minimal components. Early Amen Dunes songs such as "Baba Yaga" and "Swim Up Behind Me" only use a few carefully plucked guitar chords, his plaintive voice, and some airy ambiance to create shambling folk rock that sounds like a secret whispered in confidence at three in the morning. Over time, he's aimed for a more full-bodied sound, incorporating some dusky twang on the waltzing "Lonely Richard" and knotty rhythms on the soft-rock slide of "Miki Dora," while still keeping enough rough edges and open space to let his songs slowly unfurl like a gently billowing fog.
