The Velvet Underground were arguably New York's first great rock band. Though they sold few albums in their day, their influence was huge, leading to glam pioneers New York Dolls, and punk heroes the Ramones and Suicide. Later, NY had its hardcore, hard rock, and indie scenes—led by Anthrax, Twisted Sister, and Sonic Youth respectively—while acts like The Strokes and MGMT continue to represent.
