Inspired by Dada and punk rock, English trio Cabaret Voltaire set out to remove as much as they could from music while still making a crowd move. Mastermind Richard H. Kirk created a minimalist maelstrom of tape loops and serrated keyboards, ensuring that the empty spaces in "Sleepwalking" were as ominous as the drum machine bleats, and injecting "Crackdown" with a wounded swing that served as a roadmap for a generation of industrial rockers.
