"Gasolina" is a Molotov cocktail that explodes with ominous keys, earthquake drum loops, and plenty of sexual tension. The song introduced reggaetón to much of the world in 2014, and it represents the genre's commercial peak. But back in Puerto Rico, the man behind the runaway hit—Daddy Yankee—had been garnering street fame since the early '90s, rapping tight, often ribald bars over beats curated by local mixtape king DJ Playero. Yankee continues to roll with the genre's changing fortunes and many permutations: On 2012's "Limbo," he even embraced EDM, adding big, pillowy synths to the mix.
