EDITORS’ NOTES

Fraught as their partnership was, Ike & Tina Turner made some incredible music together. Fusing Stones-y rock 'n' roll with raw soul, the duo—led by Tina's gale-force voice—turned out some of the more explosive R&B of the '60s and '70s. They touched on orchestral pop (“River Deep Mountain High”), girl-group music (“It's Gonna Work Out Fine”) and early incarnations of funk (“Nutbush City Limits”), all rendered with a gospel-like frenzy that became the group's stamp. Or, as Tina herself put it in the immortal intro to “Proud Mary”: “You know, every now and then, I think you might like to hear something from us nice and easy. But there's just one thing, you see: We never, ever do nothin' nice and easy. We always do it nice—and rough.”
