Portishead's 1994 album Dummy was an instant classic, adding a sultry mystique to the trip-hop movement. The band won the Mercury Music Prize the following year before releasing a superb follow-up. Many acts—including The Weeknd, Bat for Lashes, Lamb, Moloko, and Morcheeba—have since drawn on their mix of moody beats, scratchy samples, and smoky vocals.
