50 Songs

EDITORS’ NOTES

Unique among 20th-century composers for his sheer range and variety, Bernstein gave us everything from West Side Story to three powerful symphonies, via more musicals, operas, songs, orchestral, choral, chamber, and piano music—all drawing on numerous influences and styles, but all employing his essentially lyrical voice. The sincerity of his music is in powerful contrast to his image as the idolized jet-setting maestro, and, alone with his music, there's an intimate sense of communication with a highly intelligent, creative yet very emotional man. Difficult to categorize, Bernstein occupies a unique place in modern music, and an unassailable one.
