  • The Basics

For all of the talk about Mates of State being indie pop's happiest married-with-children duo, their music isn't limited to organ-grinding sugar-rush songs like "Goods," "Ha Ha," "What I Could Stand For," and "Fraud In the 80's." Shades of melancholy and sweeping strings peek through the cloudy build of "Get Better," a steady shuffleboard rhythm and twinkling keys drive "My Only Offer," and "Like You Crazy" sends fluttering falsetto vocals across a patient piano melody.

Those aren't the only tricks lurking in Mates of States' album sleeves, either. As our Next Steps show, they've squeezed more life out of a basic organ-and-drums setup than bands that wield three guitars.

As much as we love the stripped-down sound of Mates of States' first three full-lengths — the hook-heavy trifecta of My Solo Project, Our Constant Concern, and Team Boo — the Essentials team really fell for the ever-evolving palette of their last two collections. The six-plus minutes of "Running Out" shift gears from bloodletting balladry to a triumphant, heavily layered chorus climax, "Jigsaw" squeezes an immaculate slice of sun-baked pop out of tickled ivories and punchy percussion lines, and "For the Actor" is the kind of cut that could draw an ear-to-ear smile from the most stone-faced cynic.

If you've ever seen a Mates of States show, you know the deal: keyboardist Kori Gardner and drummer Jason Hammel are the kind of couple that projects nothing but pure joy onstage, as they plow through picture perfect tunes and gaze at each other with wide, love-struck eyes. Don't worry, though — you won't be choking on cheesiness while witnessing our ultimate Mates of State playlist. The group's chemistry — a seamless exchange of inescapable vocal hooks and ingenious melodies — is exactly what's made them stand out for nearly a decade. That goes for their deceptively simple early days — Team Boo is caffeinated indie pop at its very best — as well as the expansive arrangements of their 2008 album, Re-Arrange Us, from the multi-tracked harmonies and woozy synths of "Now" to the skittering beats and shimmering keys of "You Are Free."
