EDITORS’ NOTES

After recruiting keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, the three surviving members of Joy Division changed the game when they swapped post-punk for synth-pop and took on the name New Order. Drawing heavily from both New York and Ibiza club culture, the band blurred the boundaries between indie and dance music on their U.S. breakthrough, Substance, and the revolutionary Technique. Despite an aversion to publicity and several lengthy hiatuses, New Order have made a lasting impact that few other British bands can match.
