EDITORS’ NOTES

New Order were legends from Day One, but they've never rested on their laurels. "Denial," from 1981, is chilly, morose post-punk; "Mr Disco," from later in that decade, is a jewel of pop-friendly acid house. Their mid-'80s synth-pop—"The Village," "Ultraviolence"—is as expressive as it is economical, and songs like "Vicious Streak" carried their bittersweet sound into the 21st century.
