EDITORS’ NOTES

Formed in Arlington, Texas, by brothers Vinnie Paul and "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, Pantera were one of the most brutal metal bands of the '90s. Rejecting their glam origins, they adopted a chugging, thrash-influenced style they called "power groove" and topped it off with singer Phil Anselmo's guttural bark. They racked up four consecutive platinum albums—plus controversy, broken bones, and a near-fatal overdose by Anselmo—before calling it quits in 2003.
