Pere Ubu have been rewiring punk since before punk was even a thing, finding ways to make hormonal garage rock stranger and stranger. David Thomas wields a world-class sneer and a surf organ riff to turn "Navvy" into a taunting rebuff of conformity; "Golden Surf II" is an overdriven onslaught of gnarled guitars and seething menace. They're odder still when they try to be pretty, like on the unexpected jangle-pop of "Heaven."
