Matthew Houck was finding new ripples in folk music for years before he achieved breakout success with his album 2013 Muchacho. "Where To Strip" is roots music by way of slowcore, with every strum doused in delay until it glistens, while "Be Dark Night" is a slow-rolling cloud of spectral atmosphere and enveloping sighs. He's also found haunting beauty inside the Grateful Dead ("Sugaree") and Arthur Russell ("You Can Make Me Feel Bad").
