Supertramp Essentials

Though they started out as a prog act, British band Supertramp soon began embracing the conventions of pop songwriting—and enjoyed huge commercial success as a result. This approach led to the group's massive 1979 hit album Breakfast In America, which sold 20 million copies and yielded three top 15 singles in the U.S. Supertramp's sound remained heavily orchestrated and complex, even after they'd transitioned into more conventional arrangements. Though Supertramp's sound became quite slick, their songwriting remained strong, enabling them to connect with a huge audience.
