  • The Basics

Long before Taylor Swift was even born, Tanya Tucker was a blonde teen heartbreaker tearing up the Country charts. In 1972, she belted out her first big C&W hit with "Delta Dawn," the gospel-gilded tune Helen Reddy would take to the top of the Pop charts a year later — by which time Tanya had already scored a #1 smash of her own, sounding wise beyond her years as she poured out the sad, soulful story of a man and the daughter he'd never know, "What's Your Mama's Name Child." And some heads must have turned at the sensual undertone the still-underage singer delivered in "Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)," a surprisingly tender tune by hard-bitten outlaw-country antihero David Allan Coe. In Next Steps, Tanya gets tough and turns up the outlaw attitude.

As if it wasn't audacious enough for a young girl simply to be the toast of Nashville in the '70s, Tanya Tucker gave tradition another turn on its ear by building a rep as an outlaw-country renegade. For the appropriately titled TNT album, she donned black leather pants and kicked up a country-rockin' storm with tough tunes like the rough-and-ready ode to her native Lone Star State, "Texas (When I Die)." Tucker brought a twangy touch of country soul to "The Man That Turned My Mama On," a gritty groover that sounds like it could've come off Dusty In Memphis. And even in her fifties, she's still saluting classic-country mavericks like Buck Owens, ripping into "Love's Gonna Live Here" with an assist from Jim Lauderdale. Hear Tanya reach back to her rock 'n' soul roots, in Deep Cuts.

Tanya Tucker's kind of country has always been grounded in sweet soul and good ol' rock 'n' roll. Even in the '80s, when the rest of Nashville was either popping up their sound or smoothing it out, Tanya kept it tough and tight with the boppin' rockabilly of "Feel Right," and showed her soft spot for '60s R&B by breathing new life into Barbara Lewis' soulful, swaying smash "Baby I'm Yours." Of course, she could honor the great country tradition of the hit-the-road-Jack duet too — it sounds like she and Glen Campbell were practicing for their still-to-come stormy romance when they cut the classic kiss-off "Don't Believe My Heart Can Stand Another You" together.

Tanya Tucker has managed one of the most monumental feats a country artist can attempt. She made her first big splash on the scene while she was still just a kid, but kept the hits coming well into adulthood. The secret of her longevity? Through ups and downs over the decades (troubled, tabloid-fodder romances with other celebs, and some dark days of dealing with personal problems), she's come out a true survivor by hanging onto the essentials of her art — a real, raw passion for what she does, and a soul-deep connection to her roots. No wonder Gretchen Wilson's modern-day outlaw-country anthem "Redneck Woman" boasts about knowing "all the words to every Tanya Tucker song" — Nashville's rebel queen has always walked it like she talked it, and we've targeted the cream of her country crop to show you just how it's done.

the title of this review says it all. Indeed, What more can be said? The Lady WASN'T great... She still IS! Her voice cannot be compared to any other. Her beauty can be compared to no-one else. By saying a song or album is by Ms. Tanya Denise Tucker you have said it ALL.
